Europe’s tech landscape has matured significantly. For nearly every US-dominated category, at least one European alternative exists with production-ready quality. The argument “there is no alternative” no longer holds in most cases.
Design Tools
Penpot (Kaleidos, Spain) is the most important European alternative to Figma. Open source, self-hostable, with a growing feature set. Since version 2.0, Penpot supports CSS-native layouts (Flex, Grid), components with variants, and design tokens. Integration is less mature than Figma – plugins, Dev Mode, and branching are missing or in development.
Lunacy (Icons8, Ukraine/Cyprus) is a desktop application with Sketch compatibility, built-in design assets, and offline capability.
Hosting and Cloud
Hetzner (Germany) offers cloud servers, managed Kubernetes, and object storage at prices well below AWS or GCP. Datacenters in Germany and Finland.
OVHcloud (France) is Europe’s largest cloud provider with a broad portfolio. GDPR-compliant, ISO 27001 certified.
STACKIT (Schwarz Group, Germany) offers cloud services under German jurisdiction – developed by the conglomerate behind Lidl and Kaufland.
Bunny.net (Slovenia) is a European CDN with global network. Additionally offers Bunny Fonts (a GDPR-compliant Google Fonts-compatible API), Bunny Stream for video hosting, and Bunny Optimizer for image optimization.
Analytics
Plausible (Estonia) is a lightweight, GDPR-compliant analytics solution. No cookies, no consent banner needed, script under 1 KB. Cloud version hosted on EU servers (Hetzner Germany). Open source and self-hostable.
Matomo (New Zealand, but EU-hosted available) offers a more comprehensive analytics suite – heatmaps, session recordings, A/B testing. Self-hosted version on own infrastructure provides full data control.
Fonts
Bunny Fonts (Slovenia) is a drop-in replacement for Google Fonts – same API, same font library, but GDPR-compliant on EU servers. Switching requires only changing the domain: fonts.bunny.net instead of fonts.googleapis.com.
Component Libraries
Base UI (MUI, France) is the only major headless component library provider with EU jurisdiction. MIT-licensed, focused on accessibility and behavior.
Build Tooling and Frameworks
Nuxt (NuxtLabs, France) is a Vue-based meta-framework fully developed in France. Comparable to Next.js, but without platform lock-in.
Evaluation Criteria
Five criteria are decisive: Jurisdiction, Data location, Portability, License (open source or proprietary? stable terms?), and Maturity (feature parity with US equivalent?).
Not every European alternative is automatically the right choice. Penpot has feature gaps versus Figma. Hetzner has fewer managed services than AWS. The decision always balances sovereignty against maturity – but the gap is closing fast.
